App Development Company for Businesses That Have Outgrown Off-the-Shelf Software

App Development Service

Rootless Agency is an app development company based in Hudson, MA, building custom web applications, mobile apps, and client portals for businesses in Boston, across New England, and throughout the United States. We work with companies at every stage – from a half-baked idea on a napkin to a fully scoped product ready for launch. Our clients are nonprofits, event companies, membership organizations, and growing businesses who need software that fits exactly how they work.

Every project starts with a free Business Requirements Document. No other app development company does this. Before a single line of code is written, we spend 8 to 10 hours with you mapping every feature, every workflow, and every edge case into a written document that becomes the blueprint for your entire build. You keep that document regardless of whether we work together.

Projects start at $15,000.

What We Build as a Boston App Development Company

Every website we deliver is custom designed and developed on WordPress. No templates. No cookie-cutter layouts. Our web design services in Boston include:

Web Applications

Custom web apps built in React, Vue, Node.js, and Python. Client portals, internal tools, booking systems, membership platforms, dashboards, and any workflow your business needs that no off-the-shelf product handles well.

Mobile Apps

Native and cross-platform mobile apps for iOS and Android. Built for real users, not demos. We handle UI/UX, front-end development, API integration, back-end engineering, and deployment to the App Store and Google Play.

Membership & Community Platforms

Apps that manage members, distribute access, handle ticketing, and connect communities. We have built membership systems for nonprofits and organizations that needed something purpose-built for their audience.

Client Portals & Internal Tools

Replace the email chains and spreadsheets. We build portals where your clients can log in, access their information, submit requests, and communicate with your team – all in one place.

Our App Portfolio

Equitable Events

Industry: Nonprofit / Youth Community

What we built: Mobile app + distribution platform

Equitable Events is on a mission to remove the cost barriers that keep kids from experiencing sports, concerts, theater, and cultural events. They needed an app that could manage complimentary ticket distribution, coordinate with community partners, handle youth sports scholarships, and reach families in underserved communities with zero friction.

We built a platform that connects trusted community organizations with the families they serve, manages event inventory, and creates a seamless experience for kids who would otherwise never get through the door. Every ticket and scholarship distributed through the platform represents a kid experiencing something for the first time.

Industry: Nonprofit Association

What we built: Membership management platform

The Northeast Roofing Contractors Association needed a purpose-built membership application to manage its member base, distribute resources, and support its centennial operations. We designed and built a platform tailored to the specific workflows of a professional trade association – something no generic membership software could replicate.

Our App Development Process

Step 1

Free Business Requirements Document

Most agencies start with a quote. We start with a document.

Before any pricing conversation, our team sits down with you – in person or remotely – and spends 8 to 10 hours building your Business Requirements Document. This is a detailed written specification of every feature, every user type, every workflow, and every edge case in your app. It is your architectural blueprint.

You keep this document. No strings attached. No other app development company does this.

Why do we do it? Because apps built without a proper BRD get rebuilt. Features get missed. Scope creeps. Costs spike. The BRD eliminates surprises for both sides.

Step 2

Architecture, Proposal & Tech Stack

Once the BRD is complete, our lead architect reviews it and we build a full proposal: timeline, tech stack recommendation, team structure, and detailed pricing. You will know exactly what you are getting, when you will get it, and what it will cost – before you commit.

We recommend the right technologies for your specific project. For most web applications we work in React, Vue, Node.js, and Python. For mobile we build native iOS and Android or cross-platform depending on your audience and budget. We will tell you honestly if a half-baked idea needs more thinking before it goes to development, and we will help you work it out.

Step 3

Branding & Visual Identity

If your app needs a brand identity – logo, color system, typography – we build it before the UI work begins. This is where Rootless is different from a pure development shop. We are a full-service agency. Your brand and your product are designed together, not patched together after the fact.

Step 4

UI/UX Design in Figma

Our designer takes the BRD, the approved brand identity, and turns them into full interface designs in Figma. Every screen. Every state. Every interaction. You review and approve the designs before a single line of code is written. No surprises.

Step 5

App Development

With approved designs and a signed-off BRD, development begins. We build clean, modular, scalable code. Front-end, back-end, API development, database architecture, and continuous integration are all handled in-house. Our developers are engineers who take architecture seriously – because apps built on a shaky foundation do not scale.

Step 6

Staging & Client Testing

As soon as a working build is ready, we put it in your hands on a staging environment. You test it. Your team tests it. We want you finding issues before your users do. This is not a formality – it is a genuine collaborative testing phase.

Step 7

QA

Our internal QA team runs every workflow and feature against the BRD. Every item in the requirements document gets tested. Every edge case gets checked. We do not ship until it passes.

Step 8

Launch

Web apps go live on your chosen hosting environment. Mobile apps get submitted to the App Store and Google Play. We handle the submission process, the review cycles, and the deployment.

Post-launch support is included. If something breaks after launch, we fix it. We also offer ongoing maintenance and feature development for clients who want a long-term development partner.

Why Businesses Choose Rootless as Their App Development Company

The free BRD.

No agency with 50 developers on the payroll can afford to spend 8-10 hours writing your requirements document for free. We can, and we do, because at our app development company we take the scoping phase as seriously as the build phase.

We tell you when an idea needs more work.

We have killed features that would have cost clients money and confused their users. We have pushed back on scope when the timeline did not support it. We would rather have a hard conversation before the build than an expensive one after.

We design and build.

Most dev shops outsource design or treat it as an afterthought. At Rootless, your UI/UX designer and your developer work from the same set of documents, on the same team, from day one.

We work with businesses at any stage.

You do not need a fully formed idea to talk to us. We have helped clients in Boston and across New England turn a rough concept into a fundable, buildable product. If you have a problem that software could solve, that is enough to start.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to build an app?

Our projects start at $15,000. The final cost depends on the scope defined in your BRD – the number of features, the complexity of the back-end, and whether you need both web and mobile versions. The BRD process gives you a detailed cost breakdown before you commit to anything.

A focused web application or mobile app typically takes 10 to 20 weeks from signed BRD to launch. More complex platforms with multiple user types, integrations, or both web and mobile versions take longer. Your proposal will include a detailed timeline.

Yes. We build web applications (browser-based), iOS apps, Android apps, and cross-platform mobile apps. Many of our clients need both – a web dashboard for administrators and a mobile app for end users. We handle the full stack.

That is fine. The BRD process is specifically designed to help you work through a concept that is not fully defined. We ask the right questions, challenge assumptions, and help you arrive at a specification that is actually buildable. Some of our best projects started as a rough idea in a meeting.

Yes. We offer post-launch support and ongoing maintenance for all our applications. We also continue building features for clients who want a long-term development partner.

We have built applications for nonprofits, membership organizations, event companies, and growing businesses across sectors. If you have a workflow problem that software can solve, we want to hear about it.
