The YMCA of Greater Boston calls fighting food insecurity its number one priority. Through its Hunger Prevention programs, the Y runs free Mobile Markets out of two trucks, a Collaborative Food Access Hub in Roxbury, SNAP application support, Summer Eats and year-round meal programs for kids. Between July 2025 and June 2026 alone, those programs provided 2,882,652 meals. The Y asked us to design and build two pages that connect this work with the people who need it and the donors who make it possible: a Food Access page that tells the full story, and a dedicated Mobile Market page where anyone can find a market, learn how it works and shop for free, with no ID or registration required.
When the YMCA of Greater Boston called, we sat down together to map out how this project would be tackled, and the challenge surfaced quickly. The Y’s website runs on a technology that is far less common today than it once was. That meant fewer ready-made tools, fewer shortcuts and a much smaller pool of developers who know it well. The pages also had a lot to carry, from market schedules and shopping guidelines to SNAP support, partner recognition and donation calls to action, and all of it had to be easy to scan on any screen. On top of that, every choice had to respect a brand that families across Greater Boston already recognize and trust. We were happy to take on the challenge.
We started in Figma, because a less common platform leaves no room for guesswork. Designing both pages there first gave the Y’s team something real to review, comment on and approve before a single line of code was written. Our goal was to keep the design as on brand as possible while making it look fresh and updated. The Y’s familiar look and feel stayed front and center, organized into cleaner layouts with bold impact numbers, easy to scan schedules and calls to action that are hard to miss.
Once the designs were approved, we built both pages on a development server, giving the Y a safe place to see everything working without touching the live site. Katherine from our team wrote the content for both pages, and we brought it into the build until every section read and looked right. When the Y approved the development pages, we configured everything for production and launched them.
The result is two pages that do real work in the community. A parent can find the nearest Mobile Market, see how it works and know that no ID or registration is needed. A neighbor can learn about SNAP support or Summer Eats. A donor or volunteer can see the impact and get involved in a click or two.
We are thankful to the YMCA of Greater Boston for trusting us with this project. Playing even a small part in helping put fresh food on tables across Greater Boston is a reminder of why we do what we do.
